4Culture

I have completed the redesigning of 4culture.org, King County’s arts funding organization’s web site. I was especially excited that they wanted to employ a user centered design approach. That meant I got to do extensive internal and external user research before I began designing. Requirements were for a responsive design built in WordPress’s CMS.

Look for the launch of the new site in 2015.
I can’t imagine a better freelance consulting project or client.

What a great opportunity to get to do the UX design for The Seattle Times advertising mediakit site from scratch. The in-house user research I conducted with sales and marketing staff fine tuned the taxonomy and content strategy. Worked closely with a talented multi-discipline design team. Developed in WordPress.

  • User research and analysis
  • Information architecture
  • Content strategy
  • Page templates and components

I won a ‘Big M’ Award for UX design in their 2013 New Media category for this site.

The Seattle Times mobile site redesign: 2013

m.seattletime.com
Sr. User Experience Design: The Seattle Times

I started at the Seattle Times just as the first optimized mobile site was handed off for implementation. I began with picking-up the loose ends of getting v1.0 launched while starting its immediate redesign. The requirement for 1.0 was to get the backend data feeds in-place. 2.0’s aim was to take more advantage of the mobile platform’s behavior optimized for the iPad.

  • Competitor and domain research and analysis
  • Deliver multiple design concepts
  • Build Axure mobile interactive prototypes used for in-house tablet user testing
  • Design, conduct and moderate user research test sessions
  • Presentation of quick findings with suggested solutions to stakeholders
  • Provide wireframes, flowcharts, Photoshop comps and design specifications for implementation on mobile device HTML5 sites

  • Worked closely with internal UX design and research teams on enhancements to Microsoft’s adCenter campaign account management environment.
  • Introduced new rich dynamic data display for the Campaign Trends and Performance modules into the existing account dashboard.
  • Provided research with click-through prototypes for 2 internal test sessions following up with findings based solutions.
  • Delivered detailed annotated wireframes and specifications.
  • Produced Photoshop redlines and assets for development.

The Early Learning Centre, one of Britons leading Highstreet brands, was a client of Tobias&Tobias. An opportunity arose for enhancements to the user account experience when they needed to add additional data capture fields to registration and throughout the purchase path.

I like to think there’s an art to the UI of deliverables. When making enhancements to existing screens I use Photoshop mock-ups. The trail of thumbnails shows the details position in the task flow. Any changes to existing screens are outlined. Specifications and annotations are noted on the side.

‘In Play Today’
Sr. Information Architect: Betfair
www.betfair.com

Since Betfair was launched in June 2000 it has become the largest online betting company in the UK and the largest betting exchange in the world. It claims to have over 4 million customers and a turnover in excess of £50 million a week. I started in 2005 just as their very first enhancement to the site was underway, the 2006 World Cup product.

I was designated to the Sports Exchange products team. One desired feature was a localized, personalized and customizable dashboard showing everything that was ‘in-play today’.

I used Photoshop to produce high fidelity wireframes using existing styles and screen components for my features and design concepts.

While head of User Experience at Tobias I illustrated an internal design process emphasizing activities and deliverables from a User Centered Design perspective.

The matrix runs from hi to low fidelity efforts on a strategic to tactical plane. It was important for the agency to capture pivotal internal and client review sessions beside parallel development opportunities.
